Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before setting sail.

  • Vancouver By Sea offers relaxed, small-group sailing experiences designed for comfort, scenery, and time on the water. These are not speedboat tours or scripted sightseeing routes. We sail at an unhurried pace, focusing on atmosphere, views, and the simple pleasure of being on the ocean.

  • Shared experiences: Small groups, capped to keep things comfortable and social

Private charters: Just your group and our skipper

Exact capacity depends on the yacht, but we intentionally keep numbers low.

  • Absolutely. No sailing experience is required. Most guests have never been sailing before. You’re welcome to relax and enjoy the ride, or ask questions and learn as much as you’d like.

  • Yes. Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Lifejackets are provided. If you have very young children or specific questions, feel free to reach out before booking.

  • All experiences depart from the Jericho Sailing Centre. Exact meeting instructions are provided after booking so everything is clear and easy on the day.

  • Most sails are approximately 3 hours, which we find is the perfect balance of time on the water without feeling rushed.

  • Yes. Please arrive 15 minutes before departure so we can get everyone onboard and depart on time.

  • If you miss the departure time, we may not be able to wait, as tides, marina access, and other bookings are time-sensitive. Unfortunately, late arrivals are considered a no-show.

  • We sail in typical coastal conditions, including light rain and cloud cover — these are often some of the most beautiful days on the water.

If conditions are unsafe (strong winds, severe weather), we’ll modify the plan or reschedule where possible. Safety always comes first.

  • Vancouver’s inner harbour waters are generally calm, and our yachts are stable. If you’re prone to motion sickness, we recommend eating lightly beforehand and bringing any medication you normally use.

  • Yes. We are a licensed and insured commercial operator. All experiences are led by experienced local skippers, and safety equipment is onboard at all times.

  • Dress in layers. Even on warm days, it can be cooler on the water.

    We recommend:

    • A warm layer or light jacket

    • Comfortable clothing

    • Closed-toe shoes with good grip

    • Sunglasses and sunscreen

  • Light snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are welcome. For private charters, you’re welcome to bring your own refreshments unless otherwise noted.

  • Our yachts do have a marine toilet, but we recommend using the facilities on shore before departure whenever possible.

    • Shared experiences are social and great value, with a small group of like-minded guests.

    • Private charters are exclusive to your group and ideal for celebrations, special occasions, or a more customized experience.

  • Yes. Private charters offer flexibility in pacing, focus, and occasion. Let us know what you’re envisioning and we’ll help shape the experience.

  • Cancellation and rescheduling policies are shown clearly during booking. Because our season is short and capacity is limited, bookings are generally non-refundable, but we always aim to be fair and transparent.

  • We do not offer refunds for typical coastal weather. If conditions are unsafe to operate, we’ll work with you on next steps.
